The Shining is making a comeback. Well, it never went away — its still considered one of the greatest films of our time. This time, the half-century-old film will be getting its own documentary attempting to ‘shine’ a new light on the iconic film.
Titled Shine On, the Stanley Kubrick film will be getting a fresh new look that is “certified” by the Stanley Kubrick Film Archie and Estate. It will explore the creative process and decisions behind the film, and make the most of the eerie vibe of the Overlook Hotel — which was actually the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.
According to Indiewire, the documentary will be narrated by Michael Sheen and will feature interviews with executive producer Jan Harlan, art director Les Tomkins, and Stanley Kubrick’s daughter Katharina Kubrick. These interviewees will “revisit” studio locations to share what they remember about the film, which is constantly referred to as one of the greatest horror films in history.
According to Katharina Kubrick, while the original The Shining has been well-documented and analyzed throughout the years, this documentary will aim to tell a story that has never been told before. She said revisiting these locations was like “stepping back into the movie itself.”
The Shining was released nearly 50 years ago, and this documentary is set to be a fantastic celebration of the legendary film as it aims to shed new light and context on the filmmaking process.
Shelley Duvall, who played the tortured wife in the film, sadly passed away on July 11th, 2024.
The Stanley estate has also approved other projects in addition to Shine On. A stage adaptation for Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb”, which will premier in the autumn of 2024.
The documentary will premiere on July 26th on the official Stanley Kubrick YouTube channel, the same day as the late director’s birthday.
