On October 8th, a new trailer for the upcoming biopic A Complete Unknown was released online and shows Timothée Chalamet in full flow (alongside his singing chops) as Bob Dylan. It is the second trailer to drop, with the first one released two months ago. While the first trailer could be described as a ‘teaser’ — featuring very little dialogue and clear screentime of Chalamet — this second trailer is a more up-close full feature.
Spanning two minutes and twenty-four seconds, the trailer begins with Dylan’s humble beginnings, when he traveled from Minnesota to New York City to be a figure in the music world before finding a love interest in Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning). After getting noticed by record producers, his career begins taking off, which includes his collaboration and relationship with fellow singer-songwriter Joan Baez. Another point of contention the trailer makes is Dylan’s switch to electric guitar, with people in the trailer stating ‘this is going to piss people off’. The trailer climaxes with him singing the legendary song “Like A Rolling Stone”.
Perhaps this plot point is reinforced by the fact that the film was based on Elijah Wald’s 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric!, which points to a 1965 performance of “Maggie’s Farm” where Dylan shocked the audience by performing with the backing of an electrical band, sparking boos and jeers.
The trailer also featured Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Boyd Holbrook (playing Johnny Cash).
Set to release later this year, this film will mark Chalamet’s eighth feature film in three years.
The film is set to release on Christmas Day 2024. Coming off the release of 2024’s Dune: Part Two, filming for A Complete Unknown began in early 2024, and wrapped in June 2024. He will also star and produce the upcoming sports drama film Marty Supreme, which is about famous table tennis player Marty Reisman.
