‘Minecraft’ Movie Trailer Builds Hype With Jack Black, Jason Momoa

It’s the era of video adaptations.

Minecraft, one of the highest-selling video games in existence (approximately 300 million copies sold), is officially hitting the big screen.

The trailer, officially titled A Minecraft Movie, was released in the early hours of September 4th. It reveals some things perhaps we thought we would never see: Jason Momoa in bangs and Sheep that look like it was run through an AI filter. The film utilizes a generous mix of both live-action and CGI, with the combination of the two producing… interesting results.

Although the imagery appears slightly unsettling, the film itself appears to be light-hearted fun that would be great for families and children. The film will star Jack Black as Steve, the “expert crafter” and who is also the main playable character in the game. The film will also star Emma Myers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy), Jennifer Coolidge, and the one and only Aquaman star Jason Momoa.

The film will see the group of four (Momoa, Hansen, Myers, and Brooks) navigate their way through the world of Minecraft and help defend a village from creatures of the night.

Here is the official blurb that was released alongside the trailer: “Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative… the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”

It isn’t the first video game adaptation in recent times. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which also starred Jack Black, was released in 2023. Borderlands, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and Sonic the Hedgehog were also recent releases. TV series adaptations Fallout and The Last of Us were also very popular.
