Bill Skarsgård is set to play the vampire haunting Lily-Rose Depp in the upcoming Nosferatu.
Robert Eggers, the mastermind behind films like The Lighthouse (2019), The Witch (2015), and The Northman (2022), is back with a brand-new project. Nosferatu is a Transylvanian horror set in 19th-century Germany and stars Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Bill Skarsgård. The film is, according to an official synopsis, “a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.” Eggers will write and direct the film.
Nicholas Hoult and Emma Corrin also feature in the movie, which is set to release on Christmas Day 2024.
Lead actor Skarsgård told Esquire “It was like conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me. It’s playing with a fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you. Hopefully, you’ll get a little bit attracted by it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time.”
Depp plays a young woman who succumbs to the will of this vampire, at least that’s what the trailer would lead us to suggest. The trailer notably never shows the actual villain, only silhouettes and reflections.
Nosferatu is based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic novel Dracula.
Announced back in 2015, this film was Egger’s passion project. Anya Taylor-Joy was originally cast for the role, but once production was slated to begin around 2022, she was replaced with Lily-Rose Depp. Taylor-Joy also worked with Eggers in the lead role on The Witch and The Northman. Harry Styles was also slated to star in this film before being replaced by Hoult.
Egger’s vision appears to have been pulled off beautifully, with excellent cinematography and moody atmosphere oozing from the trailer.
