Get ready to take the red pill again.
The Matrix, considered one of the greatest films of all time, will be having its 25th anniversary this year. To celebrate this, the film will be released in theaters for two nights in September, according to Fathom Events. The event will be hosted by Jessica Henwick from The Matrix: Revelations and will be “looking back on the monumental impact of The Matrix” while also “delving deep into the influential cyberthriller that thrust moviemaking into an astonishing new dimension with never-before-seen personal reflections on the film.”
The Matrix was originally released in 1999 and directed by the then-unknown Wachowskis. The film starred Keanu Reeves, Lawrence Fishburne, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Hugo Weaving. The film was somewhat of a surprise hit and became the major film of the summer. The film won four Oscars (Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Effects Editing) and became known for its use of unique and “modern” (for the time) visuals and sounds — not to forget the famous slow-motion “bullet-time” scenes.
Although the sequels following The Matrix were varying degrees of disappointing, the original Matrix remains one of the best films of all time. The film touched on themes of illusion, control versus freedom, and human existence beyond what we currently know as our real life. These thought-provoking themes is what made the film stand out and made audiences come back for more.
Since then, The Matrix has become a borderline cultural phenomenon, inspiring fashion, books, media, video games, literature, and much more. You can currently stream the film on AppleTV+. While the film itself is quite dated by now, seeing it on the big screen (where it was intended to be) will surely be a special occasion.
The 25th-anniversary screenings of The Matrix will be available at theaters across the United States between September 19 and 22. Tickets and more information can be found on Fathom Events website.
