The legendary British rock band Queen isn’t biting the dust just yet. In fact, according to these latest quotes, their fifteen-year hiatus could soon come to an end!
It would be quite the return, considering their previous album release was nearly thirty years ago — with 1995’s Made in Heaven, following Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991.
Roger Taylor, the dazzling drummer who has been with Queen since its formation, recently spoke about a potential return to the recording studio. Speaking with Uncut on the potential of a return, he said “I think we might… Brian [May] and myself were talking the other day, and we both said that if we feel we have some good material, why not? We can still play. We can still sing. So I don’t see why not.”
Despite their long existence, Queen to this day is still touring. Brian May and Roger Taylor collaborated with Adam Lambert, who stepped in as a vocalist, and toured together in 2023. They most recently did a 2024 tour in Japan. Since then, however, they have been on a hiatus while May recovers from a minor stroke.
When asked about new music being released, Taylor said “We have dabbled a little. It is just that you haven’t heard any of it,” he said. “It would have to be something so special that we would feel we would want to launch it on the public.”
Queen released the previously unreleased track “Face it Alone” in 2022, which features new vocals from Freddie Mercury. It was born from a session during the recording of the 1989 album The Miracle.
Lambert, who was present in the interview, went on to say there are pressures behind releasing new material. “It’s a lot of pressure if you think about it,” Lambert said. “If they’re going to put something out that’s new, it’s got to be at a certain level. It has to be the right thing. And I’ve always said, ‘Is it appropriate for me to be doing new material?’ I feel like it scares me.”
