Hundreds of people flocked to New York’s UBA Arena for this year’s VMA, culminating from New York Fashion Week. It was the VMAs 40th anniversary, and none other than Taylor Swift was one of the stars of the show. Swift now has the most career VMA wins as a solo artist and is also the artist with the most Video of the Year wins.
During her acceptance speech for the Video of the Year award (for “Fortnight” ft. Post Malone), she took the time to thank her boyfriend, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. “When I’d finish a take, and I’d say cut, and we’d be done with that take, I’d always just hear someone like cheering and like ‘whoo’ from across the studio,” she stated during her speech. “And that one person was my boyfriend Travis. Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic.” Although Kelce did not make an appearance at the VMAs, this was more than likely due to his preparation for the upcoming NFL game this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
In all, she led all artists with 12 total nominations. It means she has also broken Beyoncé’s record for the most-ever VMA wins at 29 — with Taylor now at 30 wins. She came incredibly close to tying Peter Gabriel’s record for the most VMAs in one night at 10, where Swift won 9 on the night.
The awards night came one day after Taylor Swift officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for President, encouraging her fans to register to vote to make their voice heard.
Outside of Swift, Sabrina Carpenter had the undeniable song of the summer with “Espresso,” which won Song of the Year. Best New Artist of the Year was claimed by “HOT TO GO!” and “Good Luck, Babe!” singer Chappell Roan.
